ROYAL PERTH HOSPITAL MENTAL HEALTH UNIT

Silver Thomas Hanley was engaged as the Architect and Lead Consultant for the full architectural and interior design services of the new Royal Perth Hospital Mental Health Unit. Our team led the project from inception through to completion, transforming a historically significant structure into a purpose-built, contemporary facility that meets the complex needs of mental health care delivery.

As specialist health architects, Silver Thomas Hanley is recognised as one of Australia’s leading practices in the design of mental
health facilities.

The Mental Health Unit, named “Dabakarn” from the Wadjuk Noongar language meaning “slowly, slowly”, is located on Level 2 of the New Pavilion building, originally constructed between 1904 and 1906. As one of the oldest buildings on the Royal Perth Hospital campus, the site required sensitive adaptation to accommodate a modern healthcare environment while respecting its heritage character. The name reflects the unit’s commitment to providing a space for healing, calm, and cultural respect.
