FIONA STANLEY HOSPITAL

Fiona Stanley Design Collaboration | Silver Thomas Hanley, Hames Sharley and Hassell

Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) was the largest single infrastructure project undertaken by the WA State Government and is widely recognised as Australia’s leading example of advanced health planning. Valued at approximately $1.76 billion, it is one of the most complex health projects commissioned in Western Australia. Silver Thomas Hanley proudly led the medical and master planning for FSH as part of an architectural joint venture.

The design is centred on patient-focused care, future-proofing, and operational efficiency by grouping clinical services into functional clusters and separating planned and emergency patient flows. The hospital incorporates significant evidence-based design features, including maximised access to natural light in technical spaces such as wards, ICUs, and ambulatory care. The intuitive wayfinding system reduces visitor stress and confusion. Co-locating similar ambulatory and clinical services ensures patient care is closely integrated with treatment and consultation areas.

Sustainability was a core consideration, with the hospital designed to achieve a 5-Star Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) Health Care Building rating. Flexible “no boundary” departments and standardised room designs allow the hospital to adapt to fluctuating demand efficiently. Overall, FSH sets a new benchmark for patient-centred, sustainable, and adaptable healthcare facility design.
